March 8 is Jungle Day! 5 years ago today, I spent a night up a tree in the deep dark jungles of Iriyan Jaya (New Guinea) after making an emergency landing during the Australia to Japan via helicopter Friendship Flight 2005 project.
During the flight, we ran into a storm, with excessive wind and rain. It was at a point were we couldn't turn back, and so we attempted to fly on...
The winds were too strong, and the rain too heavy. The wind forced us to use all our fuel, and the only place to land was a small beach by a river mouth cutting thru' the jungle to the sea... We had contacted the next town, over 80 Km away, and given our coordinates, however a rescue couldn't me mobilised until the next morning....
Later after the rains had ceased, we started a small fire and got set to sit the night out, however the sea started to rise and swamped the beach, forcing us to flee to the trees, all the time hoping the chopper wasn't being washed out to sea....
The next morning a rescue heli brought fuel, sandwiches, and pitted cherries, and vectored us back to their base. 5 years ago today! Ww....time has flown. Check the full story at www.ff2005.com
