HONNOJI 1

On a recent trip to Kyoto, I noticed on the map a not pointing out the original site of the Honnoji, once a famous Kyoto temple, and the site where the great Warlord Oda Nobunaga was killed in 1582. Nobunaga was on his way to a battle when he stopped for a night at the Honnoji. His men had all advanced to the battle site, except for one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide, who re-routed his troops back to Kyoto, and attacked the temple. The temple was set ablaze in the attack, and Nobunaga committed ritual suicide in the flames. His body was never found, but his helmet was recovered days later. The Honnoji was later re-built, but in a different location within Kyoto. Mitsuhide was hunted down and killed days later, allowing another of Nobunaga's generals, Toyotomi Hideyoshi to carry on his work and become the 2nd of the 3 Great Unifiers of Japan.
According to the map, this is where the Honnoji once stood, but instead of finding a park as expected, this Old Folks Home had been built,...
It was a relatively new building, with very little pertaining to it's historical importance to be found,... (continued in Pt.2)
